Now this is an interesting one from BBC News:

Haitian police have arrested 10 US nationals on suspicion of trying to illegally take 33 children abroad.

They say the Americans were held on the border with the Dominican Republic.

The group from Idaho-based charity New Life Children’s Refuge told the BBC they wanted to take quake orphans to an orphanage in the Dominican Republic.

To put it simply 10 people have been arrested on suspicion of kidnapping a number of children. Lets presume it is a misunderstanding as there is an important lesson here.

Unless you know what you’re doing, dont go to any disaster area. Things have to be official, and people need to know what you are doing there. Please see ShaunGroves.com for further information about why you shouldn’t go to Haiti and help.

In regards to the team itself, it seems that they come from the Central Valley Baptist Church, they have posted the following notice on their website:

News Update

A ten member church team traveled to Haiti to help rescue children from one or more orphanages that had been devastated in the earthquake on January 12. The children were being taken to an orphanage in the Dominican Republic where they could be cared for and have their medical and emotional needs attended to. Our team was falsely arrested today and we are doing everything we can from this end to clear up the misunderstanding that has occurred in Port au Prince.

Again. Worthwhile checking out ShaunGroves.com for his post on staying home – not going to Haiti.

Its important to bear in mind that there is a serious and dark background to this, which I think this tweet sums up very well:

If u want a phone, cigarettes or a teenage girl you can get them here in Port au Prince. Like the American who said… http://bit.ly/4YgL67
