C of E to withdraw investment from Indian Mines

Earlier this afternoon, the BBC have released a story covering the Church of England withdrawing their investment from a mining company called Vedanta.

Now a little research into this company uncovers  worries about their operation in the North East of India. The concerns are very well summed up by the Actionaid website:

Vedanta wants to mine a huge stretch of the Niyamgiri hills for bauxite to feed a US$900 million aluminium plant built nearbye.

But the hills are home to thousands of indigenous people who depend on the richly forested environment to live.

Part of me wonders why the CofE took their time in deinvesting from a company of which people have (from the sounds of it) quite serious human rights concerns about?
